MMA Fighters Predict Winner of GSP Vs. BJ Penn Fight

D Wizzle asked some of the top MMA fighters in the world and MMA personalities to predict the winner of the main event at UFC 94 between GSP and BJ Penn. Here are their predictions.

Jake Shields, EliteXC Welterweight Champion:

I think it will be a great fight with GSP taking it in the later rounds.

"The Fight Professor" Stephen Quadros, http://StephenQuadros.com/blog:

I have been wrestling for sometime on who will win between Georges St. Pierre and BJ Penn. This is such a hard match to pick for me. As anyone who knows me is aware, I never pick who I 'hope' will win. Like many, I am a fan of both fighters so I can speak with a certain amount of objectivity here.

At the moment I am leaning towards Georges. He has impressed me in how he grows and learns from hard lessons and becomes stronger from negative experiences that would have caused others to fade or decline. Penn is without a doubt one of the greatest the sports has ever seen and has a great chance of winning, but my gut says GSP.

Mike "Quick" Swick, UFC Welterweight Fighter:

It's going to be a good fight. It's going to come down to whoever shows up more focused and determined and in shape. If BJ comes in in good shape, then it could be big trouble for GSP.

Anthony "Rumble" Johnson, UFC Welterweight Fighter:

I don't know who will win but I know whoever trained the hardest and came prepared the best will win.

Ali Sonoma, Former UFC Octagon Girl:

My prediction is BJ Penn with a second round submission. I'm so excited about the fight this weekend! I'm going to Lake Tahoe to watch with Diego (UFC fighter Diego Sanchez) and his team. It'll be cool... it's one of the few times I see him during camp so I'm happy.

Mike Brown, WEC Featherweight Champion:

GSP by close decision but Penn wins round one and three. GSP by superior conditioning.

Josh "The Punk" Thomson, Strikeforce Lightweight Champion:

BJ Penn for the first three rounds and then GSP's weight plays a factor on BJ's cardio. I think BJ as a good chance to put him away in the first three rounds though.

David Bielkheden, UFC Welterweight Fighter:

My prediction is GSP by ground and pound in round four.
I think BJ is a better fighter and more technical than Georges, but then again I think that Georges is a better athlete than BJ,and I think Georges is gonna be to strong for BJ at 170 pounds. If they fought at 155 pounds, I would have put all my money on BJ!

Keith "KO Kid" Berry, KOTC Middleweight Champion:

Yea man, I'm going to have to say GSP by TKO 3rd round. I just think his skills are on another level and he will just outclass BJ.

Elaina "Beef" Maxwell, Strikeforce fighter:

This is a tough fight to call because both of these fighters are phenoms. BJ Penn has been gifted with unbelievable talent and GSP's athleticism is unreal, so I really just want to see a great fight. May the best man win. However, I do have to say that my prediction is that it'll end in a sub.

Nicole Craner, Pro Battle MMA Ring Girl:

I am going to go with my boy, BJ Penn!!! I used to live in Hawaii and went to his gym and some Rumble on the Rock shows. He is religious about training, self-disciplined, and down right humble...love him! I'm going to say BJ Penn, third round submission!

D Wizzle, D Wizzle's World:

GSP by decision just like their first fight. This will be a five-round war and GSP wins by split decision.

Q&A With Steve Mazzagatti:Talks About Controversial Johnson/Burns Fight

D Wizzle talked to MMA referee, Steve Mazzagatti, to get his take on the Anthony "Rumble" Johnson/Kevin Burns fight that took place on July 19 as part of UFC Fight Night 14.  Mazzagatti was the referee for that particular fight and awarded a victory to Burns via TKO when Johnson fell down and turned his back to Burns in the third round.

Johnson was on his way to a victory but  got poked severely in his right eye which caused him to scream in pain. Johnson had to have surgery on his right eye due to the damage from Burns' eye poke.

The agent for Johnson, Ken Pavia, is appealing the decision, and hopefully the fight will be changed to a No Contest.

Pictures of Johnson after his eye surgery can be seen here -

Q&A With Steve Mazzagatti

I know you have been getting criticized of late due to the controversial decision in the Johnson/Burns fight. Can you tell me what you saw in the third round when Johnson fell to the ground and turned his back screaming?

I did not see the eye poke as I was on the other side of the action. After he got hit, it looked like he went down from a punch,  so I called it the way I saw it. Remember,  we only have one or two seconds  to make a call, and without any  form of replay. I agree...it was a bullshit call but that's what I saw.

Do you think there should be instant replay in MMA?

It would be nice, but it could also be a problem. How far would it go? The place for the replay would be in the protest phase with the commission.

What do you have to say to all the fans out there who are ripping you for your call in that fight?

I would have loved to call the fight while sipping a cold one on my La-Z-Boy watching the replay over and over. Good work Guys.

How do you deal with the backlash? Does it ever get to you?

I can understand why the fans are bummed out. It bums me out also.  I can only call it the way I see it and  I didn't see it. My bad.

Is it true that you apologized to Johnson after the fight?

Yes.
