The San Francisco 49ers fired Mike Singletary last night much to the delight of the local Bay Area fans and media.
The fans were frustrated with losing seasons and the local sports media hated Singletary for not providing much information to them after games, and for having a combative attitude towards them.
The 49ers made a mistake getting rid of Shaun Hill and adding David Carr as the backup to Alex Smith. They should never have signed Troy Smith off the waiver wire when they had a third-string quarterback on the roster already in Nate Davis.
Drafting two offensive linemen in the first round of this year's draft was a stupid move as well. Mike Iupati has played well at times but right tackle Anthony Davis has been a complete bust.
I saw Davis play at Rutgers and saw him give up sacks in games. I was never impressed with him and I believed he had too much hype. He is still very young and has lots of potential, but his rookie year has been nothing short of a disaster.
Singletary believed in a run-first offense which does not work in the NFL In 2010. The offense was boring and very predictable. Running Frank Gore up the middle on first and second down does not work when every team knows that is your bread and butter play.
Defensive coordinators did not have to game plan much when they played the 49ers. They knew they had to just stop Gore. It didn't matter if it was Jimmy Raye or Mike Johnson calling the plays because the offense was not very sophisticated at all.
The offensive line has been horrible for years and losing Joe Staley and Eric Heitmann really hurt their depth. Having two rookies starting this season did not help matters either.
If the 49ers actually won the NFC West this season and made the playoffs, perhaps the Yorks would not have fired Singletary. They could have just fired the coordinators and brought in guys like Josh McDaniels and Wade Phillips to run the offense and defense respectively.
Singletary had a chance to keep his job but losing to the Rams last Sunday was the final nail in the coffin.
The former All-Pro linebacker should never have been hired in the first place by Jed York. Singletary had no experience as a head coach or even as a defensive coordinator before he got the job with the 49ers.
What will Singletary do now that he has been relieved of his coaching duties? He could work as an NFL analyst, become an assistant head coach again, or try to find a job as a college coach.
His coaching tenure here in San Francisco was a complete failure but you can expect him to rejoin the coaching ranks again in the future.

singletary gave anthony davis no help at a position that isn't his natural position if you watched the niners you would see that davis was constantly on a island by him self.
That's true Daniel. Good point. He seems like a better run blocker than pass blocker. He's only 21 or so and can only get better.
